Mitchell County is better understood as a collection of places than as a single destination. Bakersville and Spruce Pine anchor the county, while smaller communities, river valleys, working landscapes, craft traditions, and mountain roads fill in the space between them. For travelers who like to spend their days outside and their evenings together, that variety is the point.
Toe River Base Camp's home community sits in northern Mitchell County, with NC 261 continuing north toward Carvers Gap and the Roan Highlands. Bakersville is a natural starting point for exploring the northern side of the county.

Penland adds an important cultural dimension to the county. The community is closely associated with Penland School of Craft, whose roots reach back to the late 1920s and whose influence extends far beyond Western North Carolina.
The North Toe River and its tributaries are part of everyday Mitchell County geography. For visitors, the river adds another way to experience the area — from fishing and paddling to simply following the valley as roads and communities move alongside the water.
Toe River Base Camp sits along Cane Creek, a mountain tributary of the Toe River system near Bakersville. That puts the campground in the landscape it is named for, rather than using the river as a distant theme.
One of the county's strongest outdoor connections runs north from Bakersville on NC 261 toward Carvers Gap and the Roan Mountain area. Forest Service trail information identifies this route directly, connecting Bakersville with the Appalachian Trail and high-elevation Roan country.
Mitchell County gives hikers access to high-elevation Appalachian landscapes as well as lower river-valley terrain.

Mount Mitchell State Park protects the 6,684-foot summit of Mount Mitchell, the highest point in the United States east of the Mississippi River. It belongs in the regional story, but it is not presented here as part of Mitchell County.
Linville Falls and the surrounding gorge area are major regional landmarks that fit naturally into a longer mountain trip based in this part of Western North Carolina.
Grandfather Mountain is another high-country destination worth treating as its own day trip rather than folding it inaccurately into Mitchell County.
Toe River Base Camp is being created for people who want a simpler mountain camping experience: outdoor enthusiasts, families, and groups who would rather spend the day exploring and come back to a quieter place to camp together.
The campground is tent-only and walk-in. There are no RV sites, and vehicles stay in the designated parking area rather than at individual campsites. Pull wagons and wheelbarrows will be available to help move tents, coolers, and camping gear between parking and the campsites.
